Sandra has worked in restaurants for over 10 years. She has gone hours without being allowed to take breaks, including bathroom breaks. Denying breaks is a form of wage theft. For our 2015 Shorted report we interviewed 337 people who work in the restaurant industry and 84% said they were denied breaks within that last year. While working as a cook Sandra was badly burned when she dropped a pot of boiling water. She went to the emergency room and was docked pay for the rest of her shift that day. With no health insurance and no paid sick time Sandra has had to pay out of pocket for any injuries or illnesses suffered on the job. There are hundreds of thousands of workers across the nation who share experiences like Sandra’s.
